cold front coming We watched it all morning. From the first light of day. A wall of clouds, a cold front from the north, stalled along the mountain ranges that follow the major fault line bisecting this part of the state. Constantly shifting, pouring over the mountains and through their passes whenever the southern, warm (we were at 41 degrees when we left this morning) air mass yielded. At times overwhelming the mountains... only to disappear, vaporize to expose the jagged rocks beneath. As we left the desert, headed home with our lek route complete (a total of 344 males on the five strutting grounds, if anyone besides me is counting), we could see the entire front, stretching from one mountain range to the next. Too expansive to fit into one frame. Hovering forty miles from home. And it is finally here, now. (Well, actually, it's been here for an hour and a half now, because it takes that long to write and post an entry.) Cold, chilling northern wind. Had to repair the wind chimes for the second time in just a week. Should make for an interesting lek survey and drive to Regional Town tomorrow morning... |
