winter harbingers From our elk flight a month ago: Conifers, their tips stripped bare of the first dusting of snow of the season by the morning sun. Spent today on check station, in a biting cold, damp wind at 29-31 degrees. Only checked three elk, and not that many vehicles of empty-handed hunters. Those that were there tell me we had a foot of snow on those same mountains from last night's storm. Yet none here. By hunters' reports, the snow starts about 12 miles south of town. And, I almost forgot. Spotted my first roughleg of the season this morning. Guess winter is coming. |
