desert crosswalk A Grouse Pic from August: It was a little after sunset, when the sky was quickly dampening grey. I'd stopped to get some shots of seven feral horses feeding alongside the desert road, when I noticed another herd of seven feral horses trotting up the hillside at a comfortable canter. Apparently lulled in by the nonchalance of the first band, these seven trotted up until they found their passage across the road blocked by our truck. And then had no idea what to do. They shuffled around a little bit, before the lead mare, the grey second from the left, figured out where to go. They swung around our frontside, and neatly, unhurriedly, crossed the road in front of us. As if we were stopped at a crosswalk, and they knew they had the right of way. The heeler faces pressed hard against the windshield as the hooves clattered against the cobblestones in the road. Then the horses continued on their way, their pace unchanged, their purpose in this march known only to themselves. |
