today we had... Today we had... A fine sunrise, but no time to stop and look at it. A fluff of black feathers piled up against a reflector post in the median, which turned out to be a dead golden eagle. A traffic jam on a gas field road, at six-thirty in the morning. A new gas well pad in the middle of the road. Yep, if that's where the geologist wants the well, that's where it goes. They just built a new road around the pad. No grouse at all on the first lek. The drilling rig straight to the west might have something to do with that. Fourteen cocks and two hens on the second lek. Their strutting ground straddling the gas field road like it has since I first found them. In 1993. Sage grouse strutting where I've never seen them strut before. Maybe a new lek, maybe not. A new game warden, dressed in a Sunday-go-to-meeting suit, who seemed surprised to find a person would be out working on the Sabbath, simply because grouse don't care what day of the week it is. Nor do I. And today, did I mention, we had snow. Not everybody was happy with it. |
