a last harbinger of spring Most of the signs of spring have shown up. Some have been out for weeks, or even months. One of the first was the emergence of the hibernators, popping up when most of the country was still white. And, of course, most of the sage grouse have been strutting for two full months by now. Arrival of our newest feral horses was an early sign the winter was ending, many showing up in March. As the ice melted and the snow ebbed, the migrants started passing through. First the ducks, then the shorebirds. Through all this, the weather changed, the bitter cold, clear skies of winter being replaced with the cloudy days of spring. With an occasional burst of sunlight. The warmth and moisture brought spring blossoms to the desert. First, as always, was the white cushions of phlox, like little drifts of remnant snow by the sage. For weeks, these were the only flowers around. Not really adding any colour to the season, just replacing white snow with white petals. But recently, the colours have started to arrive. In blues and yellows. But this morning, returning from the fourth and last strutting ground of the day, I spotted one of the final harbingers of spring. The sure-fire guarantee that the winter is over, and we have only warm days ahead. The antelope are shedding. |
