Tonight was the annual awards banquet for the leaders of our youth organization. For the entire district, covering the entire county. Which is larger than some of the little eastern states.

Normally, this would be held on a Thursday. But some wanted attendance to increase, and suggested a Friday, with no work or school the following day.

Probably a good idea, but we picked the wrong Friday. Opening ceremonies for the Winter Olympics. The local "Casino Night", with the only legalized form of gambling in these parts for the entire year. Two communities were entirely absent, as they were playing each other in the annual high school basketball rivalry. Several absent because of the basketball games in our town (including youngest son).

The out-of-state rep called and canceled, because of bad roads.

So pretty much just the local crew, and a couple of out-of-towners. Good visit with the out of town couple... never met her before. A fellow amateur genealogist but, being a librarian, she has access to resources most of us don't know about. Also had two families from our group come, for their first time.

Awards went quick, since only one recipient was in attendance.

Grouse.

"District Award of Merit."

Cool. Wife's jaw dropped.

Literally. She's deeply involved in the running of this outfit, and they kept it a secret from her, too.

Too stunned to remember most of the award speech. Something about a "quiet man always helping behind the scenes." Think the wife's chest was more puffed out than mine (no pun intended).

Even though hers was already sporting the argentine Castor canadensis, the highest adult award this group presents to volunteers.

Good way to end the week.
