rollover

I would love to give another detailed rundown of my morning, but we are trying to get packed for a quick spring break/Easter trip to Carlsbad and my folks', so I will have to be brief.

Awoke to snow and slick, nasty roads. Passed an ambulance as we were heading into town, and heard MS traffic on the radio all morning.

Had six leks to do in my second standard route, and the weather screwed us over. Had snow until we got to the "Eagle snowball fight ridge", and then everything just went away. Clear skies and dry roads ahead.

Unfortunately the leks we had to check were back east in the storm clouds. Got three OK, but the blizzard hit on the fourth, no birds on the fifth, and I had to hike into the sixth strutting ground because there was too much falling snow to see.

Heavy, wet flakes, falling almost straight down. Unusual for us. Lot of fun walking around in it looking for grouse.

Heelers were upset, since they didn't get out much. Some of the leks are on a ranch where the federal animal control is authorized to use poison baits to kill coyotes, so the sisters do not get out there.

Did let them out to run in the neighboring ranch, and even played one brief game of hide and seek (I hide, they seek). Someone used their nose today and ended the game much too quick.

On the highway back to town I heard the 911 dispatch relaying a report of a roll-over at milepost 12 to the Highway Patrol. I was at milepost 15. Headed that way. Would be there in three minutes. Fortunately the accident was "negative PI and negative 10-52", or in English, no personal injuries, no ambulance needed.

Good.

Also "negative on road blockage."

Better still.

I was at milepost 14 by the time their conversation was over. Crested the next hill, and there was a semi, minicar and minivan parked along the road, with a white pickup in the ditch on the other side. Folks walking around, not trying to flag anyone down. The semi driver was smart, and pulled out and got out of the way as soon as I arrived. And the minivan.

The driver was back in his rolled but upright truck, still talking to 911 on his cell phone. He's OK, so was the passenger. But the passenger seemed to be walking around a lot. Looking at all the debris they left in the dirt, checking the truck. I was worried, but all he had was a scrape on his hand and his eyes looked ok.

I served only two functions at the accident scene. The first was minor, but the passenger was quite appreciative of the second.

First, I let the driver, and thereby 911, know he was at milepost 13, not 12. Just so the Patrol would know. No biggie here.

And secondly, I cleared off traffic, sending another minivan and a snowplow on their way so somebody else wouldn't get creamed on this hill. I also let the three women in the minicar, one of the first vehicles to arrive, know that all was OK, the Patrol was nearly here, and that they could please leave.

As soon as the three ladies left, I returned to the rolled truck. The driver was now on the phone to their boss, and the passenger said something to the effect of "thank god they're gone, I've really gotta pee!"

And he quickly stepped to the other side of the wrecked truck and proceeded to do just that. And finished just in time for the Patrol to show up.

How many times have I looked at someone, wondering if there was something really wrong with them, or with me, when in reality all they had to do was pee?

By the way, for those who care, Corky's truck is still there.
