home sweet home It'd been a wonderful toy. A simple enough GPS, with all the options and icons typical of a Garmin. But without the one standard screen you actually need for this job. But the wonderfulness was due to the extra chip, the plug-in memory card. Which showed land ownership for literally every square meter of the state. I could rave and rave about the fun and advantages of such information at your fingertips. But this isn't about that. The GPS and chip, while brand new out of the box, were... borrowed. And as of the 1st of the month, needed to be returned. The new "owner" just happened to be whizzing by on the interstate, en route to a young daughter's choir performance 93 miles away. He was running late. The easiest, fastest transfer is to just drive the mile or so to the interstate, sit and wait in the dark until he exits. A quick transfer, and he's speeding along again at 75, and I'm headed home again in the dark. Stopping in the middle of the idle highway, atop the railroad overpass, to grab a few quick shots of...
Home. Amazing how gorgeous an industrial place can look in the dark of night. I first saw this view in the middle of a cold, wintry April night almost 40 years ago. Even though it was half the size back then, I still thought it looked magical. Who'd have thought I'd end up living there. And still do, so many decades later. |
