more on Flags Just a couple responses to comments on my Flags of Our Fathers entry: Yes, Melissa, Eastwood's film is based on a book by the same name. You can find it here. I sent an email to the author way back when I bought a couple copies when the book first came out, but never received a reply. Us both being sons of naval corpsmen who were on top of Suribachi on 23 February 1945, I thought we might have something in common. Apparently he didn't think so. And Sis, this is kind of a spoiler, but in the second scene, Doc Bradley wakes from his sleep back in the USA, decades later, asking where "he" is. The "he" is Iggy, a member of his platoon. Apparently in Easy Company (and maybe in others, but Dad has made no mention of it) members paired up, promising to look out for their "buddy". Doc Bradley and Iggy buddied up. But Doc left Iggy in a foxhole at night to help a wounded soldier, and Iggy disappeared. My impression from the book is that, of all his horrible memories from Iwo, Doc was haunted most by his failure to protect his buddy. And Doug, good to see you made the trip okay. We were in Eugene just past August, but didn't see any more than the northern loop of town. Had a good lunch there, but darned if I can remember the name or place... |
