chupacabra hunter

The call Tuesday afternoon started like so many others this time of year. The man introduces himself, and explains that he lives in Texas.

Ooookay, I try not to hold that against people.

And he will be flying up here Wednesday, probably arriving Thursday morning.

Oookay. We've got archery seasons open for pronghorn. Most hunters wanting information would call sooner than two days before they arrive, but some don't.

But no, this man's not a hunter.

At least, not in the normal sense.

He's coming up to check on a roadkill on one of our highways. Or, more accurately, a road-unkill.

His story is that some trucker in a big rig ran over a large black animal near our community, with all the wheels on the right side, from front to back, and the animal then got up and staggered away.

It was supposed to be four feet high, and six feet long.

He's certain this was the same sort of mysterious, unidentified predatory creature (impervious to bullets) that has been preying on deer and wild hogs in east Texas.

Really. I kid you not.

Man was serious.

Supposedly "they" (he did not say who "they" was) have hair, hide and blood samples scraped off the truck for DNA analysis.

His plan is to go to the scene, find the blood trail, and track this beast currently unknown to science.

Did I want to come along? Would only take an hour of my time...

Ummm, no. Thursday afternoon is really too far ahead to plan my time.

But when you find the dead elk or moose that was hit by the semi, please let me know.

We like to keep track of such things.

The chupacabras I'll leave for someone else.
