summer mountain flowers

Somewhen about a week back there was supposed to be a photo entry of all the flowers I saw during a detour from Central City.

And it's never happened.

So, to tide you over, and keep me moving along, three of those images:

The prettier name of this one is "butter-and-eggs", for fairly obvious reasons. Some call it a "wild snapdragon", but its "official" name is bastard toadflax.

It's a weed.

Really.

As in, it isn't supposed to grow here. The county pays good money for people to go out and spray it if it's found on their property. Where we have it, it escaped from flower gardens at some mountain residences, and has taken to the roadsides and bare hillsides.

Bighorn sheep love this stuff. They'll clamber all over a cliff just to pluck off the yellow blossoms.

So, I haven't told any of the weed-and-pest guys we have it. Kinda insignificant compared to the cheatgrass problem we have around there.

Now, generally, I'm none too fond of daisys. Just too common, I guess.

But took a lot of daisy pictures last week. Wasn't until I was cropping this image that I even noticed the spider on the upper right blossom, standing there like a hermit crab. Waiting for some foolish insect to come in for a nectar or pollen meal.

And finally, this one.

Have noticed these bright flowers for years, but never made any effort to identify them, other than being a member of the Compositae (sunflower family).

So, I looked it up. It's a Gaillardia, otherwise known as "blanket-flower".

And now we all know.
