old business Melissa asked, so here's the news. The nighthawk didn't make it. The rehab lady from the Audubon Society called, which is a remarkable rarity, just to let me know. There were two bones broken in the wing, right at the wing joint. No way for it to heal and still fly. And nighthawks can't eat or drink by themselves unless they're on the wing. Hence, euthanized. Warden is informed, and checking on the reported shooter. In similar news, as we arrived home well after dark last night, wife informed me we had another bird with an injured wing. A flicker. But it's up the corner tree. Delivered yesterday evening, but escaped upon arrival and fled up the trunk of the huge elm. Can't fly, so we'll see what happens. No flicker this morning. In tree or on ground. Oh, and Heather? The masked heeler is probably 95-99 percent recovered. Still wins most the drag races. Still flies off the top of the porch to the lawn below, skipping the steps. But after all the running yesterday evening, after weeks of little exercise, both she and her sister were a little stiff and sore at bedtime. And you could see the masked one was having more difficulty with the stairs. Almost carried her up, but she didn't quite need it. |
