outlyers Was catching up on HerWorship and linked from there to theSpark and tried the gender test: They guessed right. With only 80% confidence. What interests me about this chart (which may be bogus, but hey, go with it) is the cluster of males in the lower right corner. And the scattering of female responses in the two left corners. Who are these people? Bored students just screwing around? Or are these real responses from real folks? It's the outlyers I always find fascinating, whether you're talking humans, animals or plants. In any species or population, the majority of the members tend to be quite similar. They all share the traits that make for good survival, under the current conditions. The outlyers all have something a little beyond the norm, that doesn't fit with average. For them, sometimes survival isn't easy, or even possible. But when conditions change, and the normal members have trouble adjusting, you can bet that at least some of the outlyers will suddenly be doing really well. Either that, or nobody will. In all populations, it's the outlyers that are the most interesting. The ones with the potential to take off and start something new. Ask me about dyke sage grouse sometime. They're there, but damn few. What sort of change will it take for them to thrive? |
