Australia We were there less than three minutes after they opened the doors. And the line already snaked back to the back of the theater. Good food and entertainment still brings in the crowds. The Soroptimists did themselves proud again. A great spread of hors d'uvres, including some delicious honey-breaded bacon thingees, and wonderful champagne punch. All the usuall fixin's... fruit plates, cheese and crackers, hot wings, egg rolls, tamales, shrimp, Deviled eggs... Just about everything you ever wanted to stick a toothpick into. And yeah, they hit the ceiling with at least two champagne corks. And being the community we are, although the theater was filled to every seat, we knew the family in front of us, the folks behind us, and the woman on my left. And probably half the other ~125 people in the room. The film was Australia. Umm, I don't want to insult the handful of readers I have from that wonderful continent and country, but, well, the movie was okay. The storyline was predictable, even down to who had to die when, and even a few of the actual lines. Some of the acting was good, but a lot of it was not. Nicole Kidman, at times, was the most disappointing. Afterwards, the wife claimed it was pretty much a remake of Gone With the Wind. Just a different time, a different war, and a prettier setting. Jedda, the dingo, was fun to see. Speaking of the setting... I claim the station used here was the same used in Quigley Down Under (a superior film). The wife says it's not. Any of my Aussie readers able to settle this dispute? |
