a good empty Yet another image from a week ago. And probably not the most scenic, at that. But I don't recall ever seeing sundogs from above before. Rainbows, yes, but the coloured refractions from ice crystals hanging in the air? I don't think so. I am presuming the air temperature was dropping in the valleys as the sun dipped below the hills, rapidly reaching the dewpoint. Which wasn't very high, since I think we were flying around in something like, 11 degrees. Below zero. Hence the frost on the inside of the windshield. Almost every photo I took during that flight had frost blurring or covering part of the frame. I had to clean off a piece of my window with either my sleeve or my library card before nearly every shot. Still, the sundog was cool. At this point, we're still probably 35 miles from the airport, on the far horizon just off frame to the left. The ranch headquarters to the right of the glowing ice cloud is the only habitation between us and the airport, and the ranch is almost certainly empty this time of year. An empty place. But it's a good empty. From the air, anyway. |
