new lek names I'm not quite sure what I was expecting. Maybe some names that were really difficult to spell. Maybe even ones that would require me to search for a new font, just to get the special characters. But there were none of those. Today I finished combining our region's individual sage grouse lek databases into one, for eventual roll-up into the statewide summary. And this year, for the first time, we're including the leks on the Indian reservation. So, well, I kinda expected them to have more interesting names for their strutting grounds. They didn't. Just like most of the leks off the Res, these are named for prominant land features nearby. Alkali Butte, Bighorn Butte, or Sage Creek, Meadow Creek and Dry Creek. Boulder Flat. Several named for nearby towns, and one for a ranch. One called Fenceline. But as I scanned down the alphabet on the screen, I finally spotted one not quite like all the other lek names in our database. Sacajawea has a sage grouse strutting ground named after her, now. Cool. |
