ditch decision Okay, here's the situation: Do you go ahead, or turn around? Now, to help you make up your mind, a few extra data. This is the fourth and last bad crossing of the morning's route. Yes, it's the worst of the four. The other three basically necessitate going cross country to drive around the ditches that have claimed this essentially abandoned road. Not possible here. But turning around means going around the other three crossings again. And back tracking about three and a half miles of rough dirt road. Bear in mind, that ditch is at least two meters deep (six feet) on each side of what used to be the road. And the culvert underneath has been washed out, so the hole there in the middle is also two meters deep, as presumably is the hollow space under what is left of the road. Bear in mind, the soil here is basically clay. Hard as concrete sometimes, sometimes soft as dust. Depending on whether it is dry or damp. It's been almost a week since there was any rain (I think). But you notice how soft it is in our tire tracks. Bear in mind, you're a two-mile hike from any other sort of road, and possible assistance. Bear in mind, in this basin of Jurassic-aged rock, you got no cell signal, and radio reception is iffy. So, I repeat. Do you go ahead, or turn around? |
