sun changes on the road Last Friday, as I headed to the funeral, I happened to hit sunrise just as I reached the wind farm. And then had the pleasure of facing into the glaring sun for another thirty miles, or so. On the return leg that evening, lo and behold, the clouds began to turn pink as I again went by the wind farm. Most of them flattened, lenticular clouds, the lens-like formations we get so often when the raging wind hits an obstructing mountain or ridge and is forced to rise. Add to that a bright Venus in the west, just above the slimmest crescent moon, and it was a remarkable end to an uneven day. I took over 70 shots on the last fifty miles of highway. Most of these on the fly, the freezing air rushing in the open window at 75 mph. And so, naturally, most of the shots aren't worth a thing. Especially any with Venus or the moon. And yeah, glaring sun in the face again. Stopped at one exit briefly (I was pushing the clock to get the rental car back before six PM), and even those photos had blurred planet and satellite, just because it was so dark, and the wind so cold. But a few came out. Those low banks of clouds in the west really lit up, and had almost all of my attention. But it wasn't until I rounded a curve, and got a look in the side mirror that I realized the real show was going on behind me. Yeah, I got the car returned before the dealer went home that evening. With barely any minutes to spare. But it might have been worth it to stop somewhere, and watch the show behind me. If only for a minute or two. |
