little downy Now, I was going to tag this Grouse Pic onto the previous entry, but it was full enough with the Mars shot from Spirit. So, for your enjoyment, is a little woodpecker I spotted in the office parking lot in Regional Town last November. I have concluded that this is a Downy Woodpecker, rather than a Hairy Woodpecker, but some of you can feel free to dispute my classification. He's (it is a male, because of the red topknot) got the shorter bill of the Downy, and also the connection of the black forehead and black eyestripe just in front of the eye. But there's a little white spotting on the forehead (only mentioned for Hairys in my guidebooks), and the pure white tail feathers, also indicative of the Hairy Woodpecker. But he was a little guy, certainly not 9 inches tall like a Hairy woodpecker, so I'm going with a Downy. I notice from my profile that I lost a regular Diaryland reader recently. That bothers me, as it always does, and I don't know why. It's as if a friend left, without even a "fare thee well", yet I know that it's common. And folks should feel free to change their tastes and move on. But it still bothers me. And it bothers me that it bothers me. |
