Underworld

So there's a new love in my life.

Kate Beckinsale.

At least, so long as she's a vampire...

We went to see Underworld last night. For the second time.

It's only been here two nights.

Chuck was happy to see us. Guess he misses his regulars when they're gone for a while. He went through a quick list of the great films we've missed. Which may be true. But the wife didn't have the heart to tell him we expect those particular films will be just as great when they come out on cable. Or DVD.

We save going to the theater for those films where you really need to see it in a theater.

Like the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Which, by the way, Chuck is considering having a midnight showing of, when the third is first released. Not for everyone, of course. Just his regulars. Invitation only.

Told him he's already sold five tickets if he does.

(Not that that matters so much to him. Recently had an anniversary celebration of his business, where he admitted in the newspaper that he gets nothing at all from the ticket sales. Only from the concessions. Which is another reason he's happy to see us...)

Although the wife smuggled in a box of mints to the second showing of Underworld. The box she bought and did not finish at the first viewing.

AAAAAnyway... Underworld. Obviously, we didn't hate it, since we had to get right back in to see it again. Overall, a predictable plot line, but with unexpected twists. Great vampires and vampire effects. Werewolves looked little improved over American Werewolf in London, which the wife says they copied the sound effects exactly, but still good.

Love Selene, Beckinsale's character. A vampire you would gladly bare your neck to, just to spend eternity with. Wife claims she would make the perfect Dhampir, and I have to agree. (Anyone else know that reference? Herworship? They reportedly live near you.)

Film was shot in Hungary, making one think the decrepit buildings were just found as is, no need for sets. Even without knowing that, the settings made me expect subtitles. Weird having everyone speaking perfect English, but the signs and marquees are Hungarian. Definite copying of The Matrix and some other dark and dank action films that I can't think of right now.

But as Ruby Rod would say, "But who cares?"

It's a great film.

Suspect we'll go again before it leaves town.
