notostracans again This is for Anenigma: If you thought notostracans looked weird from the top, you should see them from the bottom side... No, there's nothing wrong with this Noto. While its neighbor in the mud is digging through the silt to find plankton, bacteria and other micros to eat, this one was swimming upside down, filtering through the slime on the surface of the pool to find and eat the same sorts of things. And yeah, they're that red underneath. All those pedipalps are rippling in synchronized waves, washing the foodstuffs up front where the mouth is. It's an hypnotic thing to watch, particularly those that are fanned out like oars. And the palps are just as soft as they look. Their shells may look hard, but they're actually just kinda rigid, like fish scales. Fold and crumple real easy. Don't know if they can bite, but I doubt it. The ones we kept in bottles with fresh water shrimp ("sea monkeys") were quite adept at killing and eating the other species. And they go into a flurry of fighting when they happen to bump into one another. Pretty impressive for critters that are probably only a few weeks old. And may not have that long to finish their life cycle. Thought their days were numbered, but we've had three days and nights of good rains, so I suspect their pools have an extended lease on life. |
