benchmarks & notostracans

Not much to say about today. Still trying to wrap up the antelope classifications for my last herd. Still two routes to run, and a flight (Monday morning).

Classified this morning, but got a late start. At least a half-hour later than it should have been. And stayed a half-hour late until near the end of the route, where we suddenly hit such dry country there were no antelope for miles.

Hence nothing to count, nothing to write. Makes up time real quick.

Did find a few benchmarks, some orphans, some not. And passed on others nearby since we were running so late.

Some benchmark hunters have the ritual of touching each and every mark they find. It appears the masked heeler is getting into that habit.

And no, I didn't pose that shot. She was just being a typical heeler. Sees me focusing my attention on something (the benchmark), and comes trotting over to see what is so interesting.

Cute when you're taking pictures of brass disks.

Not so cute when you're trying to get shots of butterflies.

Made the annual stop at the Buffalo Pits, and found dozens of mourning doves (don't tell anybody... the season opened five days ago and already no hunters can find one), and hundreds, if not thousands, of these.

Then came home, ate lunch while watching Highlander, and promptly fell asleep.

Awoke just in time to send my fax to the Office of Homeland Security (really), and head out for the evening classification route.

And decided not to go.

Officially, I'll say it was too dark and cloudy (it was... even rained a little), but the truth is, I wanted the rest of the day off.

Antelope hunting seasons start tomorrow. 12-14 hours of sitting along a highway, waiting for hunters and their prey to come by. Need to get ready. And rested.
