fire news Happened to hit Fox news this morning as I waited for my coffee to cool, and got to see the footage of the Rhode Island fire, watching the flames climb the wall, and then spread across the ceiling. With the band still playing, and people still dancing. Horribly tragic, I know, but I stayed and watched that video a half-dozen times, checking the faces in the crowd. The few who saw danger, and those who were oblivious. And wondered if that determined their survival. Did those who still retained that primal fear of fire have a greater survival rate? Or was it still just luck and chance, and the helping hands of others that determined who got out alive? Sorry to be so analytical about something which is so personal and painful to others. But that's where my mind went. Anyway, I then extended my break from work to log on here, and check a diary. Not because she's in Rhode Island. She's not. But I was pretty sure she had mentioned the band Great White recently (maybe not? Can't find it in her recent entries.) And found her discussing fire, alright. But not the "big news" Rhode Island fire. She was discussing the New York gasoline fire. The one that got a few blips of mention in the broadcast I watched. The one where her Dad works. He's one of the 30 workers who were at that site. A friend of the missing and wounded. Amazing how quickly abstract news can become personal. (And if you're wondering, Mocksie's Dad is okay.) |
