21 August 2002 - 08:52

cloudy morning

Alarm went off as scheduled, at 05:30. Stumble into the dark kitchen to start the tea pot full of water, and then back to bed. For twenty more minutes of sleep.

Well, twenty turned into 35. But no disaster. Just need to hurry. Get up to turn the water down and get dressed.

And notice it's kinda dark for after 06:00.

Quick check out the bedroom window finds clouds. Lots and lots of dark clouds, covering the sky.

Now, yesterday morning was overcast, too, but the clouds were thin and flat. Likely to burn off as soon as the sun's rays touch them. So we went out anyway.

But they didn't. Didn't burn off until after ten o'clock, greatly hindering my efforts to find those white and red pronghorn out in the scrub. And even then the clouds were replaced with a thick smoky haze.

These, however, are thick and fluffy, the kind of clouds that stick around all day. Wonderful for cooling a hot summer, but horrible for spotting antelope.

Back to bed I went.

With nary a complaint from either of the heelers.

So I sleep in. Still in bed reading the paper when the wife heads off to work. And I catch a flicker out of the corner of my eye. But when I turn to look into the hallway, it is gone.

A few seconds later, another flicker. Instantly vanished.

So I stare at the hallway wall.

And a bright, skinny rainbow spins onto the wall, then immediately disappears.

Created from one of the crystals hanging in the living room window, no doubt. Spinning in the breeze. Perhaps even from the crystal from our Honeymoon.

And then it hits me.

You need sunlight to make rainbows with crystals.

Check the window.

You guessed it. Pure blue sky. Not a cloud in sight.

Perfect antelope classifying weather.

Craaaap.

You think the wife believed me when I said I slept in because of all the clouds?
