humdrums

Been getting a lot of new hits on this diary in the past few days, most a result of a new link on another site. (Except for the one looking for "Tanya Harding honeymoon photos". Sorry, none here. But don't worry. I've seen 'em, you're not missing a lot.) Lots of new readers, and what do I offer?

A humdrum entry about seeing a humdrum movie. Not even a decent movie review included.

Why couldn't that link have shown up on some day when we were actually out in the field doing something? Anybody want to read about me sitting down and transcribing field observations, complete with UTMs, to data entry forms? Or about heelers asleep on the couches?

I thought not.

Considered doing one of my "the item at hand" ideas. Lots of items to discuss here, at hand. A milky-white, complete arrowhead that I am still trying to figure out how to make into a necklace for the wife.

A dollar bill folded neatly into a miniature bowtie.

A centuries-old bison tooth. Right next to a small chunk of the Ferrises. From the very top of the Ferrises.

Jars and jars of little critters in formalin. The Jerusalem cricket would be a good story (not this one... the one in the story was retrieved and released alive).

The rusted brake handle from an airplane.

Now that one I have to write. But not here, not now. Someday. Perhaps the day I take it back where it belongs.

Maybe I should offer personal drama. Got some this week. We're retrieving eldest son from college this weekend.

And he ain't goin' back.

He had to do extremely well this term, to make up for the dismal first term. And didn't make it.

So, what do we do with him now? There are damn few jobs in this community, and even fewer careers. Know that he isn't staying here. My folk's eldest son still lives at home, in the same room he and I shared, in the same room we helped our Dad build.

That will not happen to my son.
