signs of spring I forgot to mention that Spring arrived last week. I'd been noticing the usual signs of spring. The first ferruginous hawk. The last roughlegged hawk. On Sunday, the 7th, I had a hard time listening for strutting grouse near the Circle Bar barns because of one lone sage thrasher, singing away. The sage thrasher is a plain bird, but they have a melodious voice and a courtship song that literally will not quit. And will drown out most everything else within several hundred meters. A sure sign of spring. Three days later I heard the first sage sparrow of the spring. With its faint PRETTY BIRRRRD, PRETTY BIRD. And another a day or two later. On Tuesday I noticed the clumps of grass by the gate on the way to the High Point strutting ground were no longer brown. They were green!. And not just barely green, but with green blades 2-3 centimeters long. But that same afternoon brought the arrival of the two, surefire, guaranteed signs of Spring. Tourists and construction. |
