The county Road & Bridge recently fenced one of our roads. Rather than cutting the roadway and installing a cattleguard at the end of the fence, they ran the fence to the asphalt and then painted stripes to resemble a cattle guard on the road.

A state highway south of town has had one of these for more than 15 years, and it has successfully restrained cattle from entering the roadway. A different county has had similar success with a painted cattle guard well to the north of us.

Some enterprising citizen has added this hand-stenciled sign to our county's new fence:

Presumably they do not trust the basic intelligence of our local cows, but do trust their reading skills.
