birds on the wing spring is sprung the grass is riz i wonder where the birdies is. the birds are on the wing they say how absurd! the wings is on the bird! Today was spent in a meeting in Lander. Rode up with one of my nearest co-workers, and we never stopped talking for the whole two hour trip. We hadn't really talked since last fall. God, its been a long winter! But there are signs of hope. Lunch at the Gannett Grill, and it was just about, almost, but not quite warm enough to eat outside on the patio. Maybe in a month (supposed to snow again tonight). And the lettuce and tomato on that inch-thick burger somehow tasted fresher, crisper. The Jeffrey country was practically bare of snow, and the pronghorn and deer were out in force, stuffing their faces with all the forage that's been buried since Hallowe'en. Looks like we didn't lose them all, at least not on the Sweetwater. Of course we were still white and snowbound near home, but the brown is coming. And after that, the green! Passed a hawk on a reflector post on the drive home, and it wasn't a roughleg! I'll repeat that. It WASN'T a roughleg. Saw my first roughlegged hawk of the winter early in November, and every hawk since then has been one of these northern migrants. But not today. Finally somebody different. Don't get me wrong, I like roughlegs. Pretty black and white birds, and sometimes the only sign of life in the winter. But black and white gets old after a few months. I'm eager to see somebody with a bright rusty red tail! There is hope. |
