icy rescue This is where I spent most of the day. Or at least, the most important part of the day. What? You don't see it? Look closer... The original report claimed the pronghorn had fallen thru the ice. But we soon discovered that, no, she just couldn't stand up on the slick surface. But this is new ice. As in, the first ice of the season, less than two days old. And, for the most part, only a couple centimeters thick. Less in some places. The manager of the place told us the pond was up to eight feet deep. Oh, joy. Just enough to drown in. So our solution involved a boat... But unfortunately, there was no road to the water's edge. And a fence that blocked the truck and trailer, with no gates (well, there was one, but it was under water, or rather, under ice, so not very useful). And the boat was about two times as large as it needed to be, and three times as heavy. And, of course, the media was there. Though, truth be told, he lent a hand more than once. I have no more photos. Was kinda too busy, and didn't dare take the camera out on the ice. Suffice to say, the tale had a happy ending. We got the little pronghorn to dry ground, unharmed. But yeah, we both went through the ice. Scary. Thank goodness for the boat. |
