western serengeti It was almost like being in Yellowstone. Except for the dust. And there being no trees for miles around. And gas wells everywhere. But other than those details, it was like Yellowstone... Vehicles stopped in the middle of the road, folks taking pictures of elk crossing in front of them. More vehicles piling up behind. Folks watching a miniature Serengeti, with elk, pronghorn and a coyote all trying to drink scarce water out of the same desert pond. A proud bull pausing for photographic effect... I suppose there is probably more than one gas company out there that would pay good money for this shot: But the trucks stopping to scream out with their hunters' bugles was a little different than Yellowstone. Don't see that behavior much in the Park. The driver of the white company outfit was Calvin, who's been watching and mapping these desert elk for over 20 years. Seems the reason I haven't seen him around lately is he got promoted, to a job 135 miles away. Apparently his co-workers didn't believe his tales about elk in this desert gas field. Until they had to stop to let this herd pass. |
