5 to 7 percent

The sign is large, intended to get your attention. And if you're one of those tourists in an RV or hauling a trailer taking the scenic, direct route to the Yellowstone Country, you'd best pay attention.

There's no easy way to go west off these mountains.

You got your 10 miles of 10 percent grade (mentioned briefly here) or, you got your 18 miles of 5 to 7 percent grade highway.

Whichever route you take, if you're in one of those big rigs, I guarantee your hands will tired from the clenching by the time you reach the flatlands. And if you drive with your window open, as I do, you'll be inhaling the scent of burned brakes and tortured clutches lingering over the highway near the bottom.

If you opt for the longer, 5 to 7 percent grade, this is what you have to look forward to.

But if you can, make sure you pay attention to the scenery around you as you go down.
