nostalgia versus new I was two miles from the trailhead to Porcupine Falls. I'd spotted a moose and was snagging a couple photos when a pickup pulled up alongside, blocking my view, followed by another. Five fellow biologists from our meeting, including the local bio as a guide. They were headed off to Bucking Mule Falls. Hmmmm. What a choice. A short but steep hike alone down to Porcupine Falls, where I haven't been in over 35 years, where during my last visit I skinny-dipped all the way across the pool to the base of the falls, Or.... A much longer hike with friends to the overlook for Bucking Mule Falls, someplace I've never been, just seven miles from the Montana border. Nostagia? Or new? Nostalgia or new? It was already almost six-thirty. No time to do both this evening, and there'd be no time after tonight, either. It might be another thirty years before I get back here. Nostalgia? or new? You know what I did... (A view of Bucking Mule Falls from the overlook.) The overlook. |
