supporting bp After last week's meeting, I couldn't resist taking a photo of the door of the truck parked next to mine. A symbol, perhaps, of the hard times that have fallen upon the energy companies in general, and British Petroleum specifically. There was a time, not long ago, when company decals in such disrepair would have been immediately replaced. Gotta look shiny, new and profitable, you know. As I finally downloaded that image off the camera, though, I thought about the recent calls for boycotting BP products. I will not be participating in any such boycotts. And not just because any successful boycott will hurt a lot of people besides BP. No, I will not boycott their products because I do not want BP to lose money. I'm not even happy to see their shares drop so much value. And not because I have any financial ties to BP. No, with all the mess, both economic and environmental, occurring in the Gulf because of BP's well accident, I want BP to stay healthy. And wealthy. It's gonna take billions and billions of dollars over the next few years to remedy or ameliorate the Gulf disaster (you cannot "fix" it). I want BP to have all the money they need to do that. Better that money comes from the sale of products that society wants and needs... Than our tax dollars. |
