Gulf oil ripples

We've been having these meetings since 2001, but this was the first time we found plastic toys at each seat, along with the day's handouts. Foot-long soft plastic orange and yellow wire-stiffened rods.

"Stress reducers" I was told by a gal across the room. Quite a few folks spent the meeting coiling, twisting and mauling theirs.

I coiled mine up into a little rattlesnake and left it by my tea. When the boss lady from Capitol City sitting next to me left early, I stole hers and made a mini Loch Ness monster.

The stress in the room was a little high, actually. Having nothing to do with the meeting. All the industry people had gathered together on one side of the table, next to the doors. Like they may need to beat a hasty retreat. Since they included representatives of British Petroleum and Anadarko (~20% share in the spilling Gulf oil well gusher), their side of the table was fairly somber.

I happened to find myself next to the head of local BP Operations at the coffee pot during one of the breaks... Do you people all flinch when you hear the word 'Gulf'? I asked.

He flinched. Really.

The topic never came up in the meeting, until almost the very end when there were several jocular but unkind comments at the BP and Anadarko folks about leaving open wells. All of these jabs came from representatives of smaller gas and oil companies, not agency folks, presumably happy to see the big boys in trouble for once and not themselves.
