raspberries and worms The kid bagging our few late-night grocery purchases looked at the cheese for a second, then put it aside to put in another bag. "Cheese with raspberries just doesn't sound very good," he explained. "Better than raspberries with mealworms," the wife answered, as she handed him the plastic container of refrigerated grubs. "Ewww! We sell these?!" he squeaked. The worms got a bag of their own. As did the raspberries. After watching Shrek 4 (excellent, predictable flick) with the youngest son, we had decided to stop by the grocery store before going home. Earlier that evening I had finally convinced the wife to try feeding tiny strips of ham to our injured poorwill. Somehow, the idea of expecting an insectivorous bird to survive on the meat of a porcine mammal seemed, well, wrong. The sleepy little bird seemed none too happy with ham, either. But in my foraging in the yard and garden, I found only one centipede, and the sowbugs (rolly-pollys, or pillbugs) were getting scarce. And there are almost no flying bugs yet. We had new snowfall just a couple weeks ago, remember. So we stop in and check the store's bait refrigerator and, lo and behold, they have mealworms. Hence the scene at check-out. The poorwill was still alive when we got home, and awake with those incredible, gorgeous, huge black eyes. The mealworms went down easier than the ham, or even the dirty sowbugs. |
