griping about bad ice

Yes, we enjoyed Women's Figure Skating.

Neither the wife nor I quite agreed with the judging, but this isn't about that. It was near the end of Mirai Nagasu's long program, after she'd stumbled over nothing at all, except some bad ice, that the wife said, "I think you're right."

And that alone is a noteworthy event, in my book.

What was I right about?

Well, folks, this is the Olympics, right? So why in the world are we letting the best skaters in the world stumble, trip and fall on crappy ice? I mean, look at that ice. Every square foot of it is carved and chunked up. By the time the last skaters get on it, it's like skating on asphalt. Hans Christian Anderson couldn't skate a straight line on that stuff, much less land a triple axle.

I realize we're an impatient world, and they have a lot to get done in a short amount of time, but really...

Couldn't you give each skater, or at least each group of skaters, virgin ice?

I mean, this is the Olympics, isn't it? You don't have to slow things down with one Zamboni out there. Send in a fleet of eight or nine Zambonis at once, and you'd have that ice smoothed off in less time than it takes to post the scores.

And maybe then we'd see the true beauty of what these athletes can do.
