no good deed...

No good deed goes unpunished.

That's what I told the boss (actually, the boss's boss) when he explained what he'd done.

He swiped one of my wing barrels.

Yes, the grouse season is over, so the barrels do need to come down. But for some strange reason he assumed this lonesome barrel way out in the middle of nowhere belonged to someone else.

And he decided to do that biologist a favor and pick it up for him, saving said beneficiary from having to drive eight miles of muddy, muddy road.

And eight miles back.

Said biologist was quick to point out it wasn't his barrel, and in fact, the boss had just hauled it 66 miles in the wrong direction.

Now, if this were just an ordinary wing barrel, it could just sit and wait for me to someday come to town and pick it up. But this is the only one of my 16 barrels that has a removable lid. It is the only one made of half-thickness steel, making it much lighter and easier to carry and maneuver through gates. It is a full 55 gallon drum, deep enough that no badger, raccoon or rattlesnake has ever escaped from it.

This is my capture barrel.

Of all 16 barrels, this is the only one that needs to be here at my house.

And now, thanks to a well-meaning boss, is sitting 127 miles away. (The funny part? Back when said boss was a mere game warden, living in a house just eight miles from said wing barrel, he used to collect the wings from that same barrel in that exact same location every season and give them to me. He knows whose barrel that is. Or at least he used to... and yes, he's talking about retiring soon. We're not happy about it, none of us. (Except the one who wants the job...))

Aaaanyway, as the slightly chagrined boss sent out the email asking if anyone passing this way could please give my barrel a ride home, he began it with these words:

"No good deed goes unpunished."
