desert route 2.2 Nice sunrise this morning. Otherwise, a fairly routine morning. The grouse were out doing their thing with a total of 237 cocks and 40 hens on five strutting grounds. Pretty certain hen numbers have peaked, and should taper off quickly now that the full moon is past. Got panicked by a low flying plane at the first lek, before the sun had even peeked out, but it swung wide to avoid spooking the birds I was watching. Our local pilot, I assume. Anybody else would have just swooped in, ignoring the green truck parked on the low ridge south of the grouse. And there were two ravens sitting on the low ridge north of the lek pictured above, with grouse strutting around them. I assume either they were: a) waiting for the grouse to quit so they could go down and pick on the bones of the grouse killed there yesterday morning by a golden eagle, or... b) hoping the eagle would pass by and kill another grouse for breakfast, leaving the ravens fresh scraps to dine on. |
