And Melissa, elk pretty much only bugle during the rut. Which in our country runs from early September through mid-October, depending on elevation and weather. And yes, you feel it in your bones when you're as close as I was to that bull. But sometimes the faint echoes coming down a canyon are much more stirring. There were a few calls drifting up from that river bottom below when taking these pictures.

And listening by moonlight seems to be the best of all.
