Twilight

We had to choose between Quantum of Solace or Twilight. The wife wanted Bond, but I had been unimpressed with Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, so figure Quantum can wait.

Besides, have you looked at Kristen Stewart?

But yes, we entered with some trepidation. It would be awfully easy, and in fact typical, to make a teenage vampire movie and spend most of the time on teenager angst. Which is interesting to no one except teenagers, and then only for a few years until they, too, outgrow it.

Fortunately, this film did not. In fact, they seemed to go out of their way to avoid the typical high school cliches. Instead of being ostracized and taunted, the new kid in school is simply welcomed. Instead of dwelling for interminable minutes over prom dates, friends simply get the right couples squared away, and all are happy. And we move on to more interesting things.

But, as in youngest son's main critique in the parking lot afterwards, "Real people don't act that way."

Yes, most adults in the film are fairly clueless, but that was to be expected, and the film didn't waste a lot of time or frustration on it.

No, as unbelievable and simplistic the characters were, I enjoyed it. As predictable the plot, I enjoyed it. All the inevitable, wondrous possibilities of being invited into an alien culture that runs through most vampire films were there.

Think Buffy crossed with Highlander.

"Let me get this straight... you're going to spend an evening in a house full of vampires, and you're worried they won't accept you?"

Yeah, the climax was done too simply, too easily. But the film still left me wanting for more.

Which means I must have liked it.

I miss fangs, though...
