warm and fuzzy check station

Another twelve hours sitting at a pulloff on a highway.

Got to meet a new highway patrolman. Watched him pull over three unrelated vehicles in tandem just up the highway. He clocked all three at over 80+mph as they passed in opposite directions, so he pulled a u-turn, passed all three, parked on the shoulder and then stood out on the highway to flag each over in turn. I watched as he went from the front of the line to the back, passing out tickets.

This was just past my signs, maybe barely a quarter-mile away. Before he could get to my station he had a semi nailed for speeding as well.

Spent his lunch break visiting with me, letting traffic return to its normal flow of 75 mph.

Speed limit is 65.

He says it takes half a day just to get ten miles out of town on this highway.

Assuming you ignore everybody driving 75 or less.

When he left he didn't make it a quarter-mile before hitting his lights and pulling another u-turn, racing another 80+ speeder into town.

No wonder vehicles pile up behind me when I decide to save gas and go 62.

The day was at least more productive than last weekend. At least twenty antelope through. And one sandhill crane.

My first.

Screwed up, too. After visiting with a warden later, and checking the regs, that crane hunter should have gotten a ticket. Or at least a warning. But I have the satisfaction that the warden didn't know for sure, either, and had to look it up.

And several pleasant visits, some with folks I haven't seen for a year. A leisurely, if frequently interrupted, lunch with the wife. A few compliments on my newest writing endeavor, including one fellow who wasn't even hunting, but wanted to stop and let me know how much he enjoyed them.

Three young college men with a record book buck, in a year when I wasn't expecting any great horn growth. Two young hunters with their first pronghorn.

All in all, a warm and fuzzy day.

Even if it was pretty chilly in the morning and evening (there's fresh snow on the mountain to the southeast).
