counting coup Okay, first off, I posted the photos for Thursday's entry. Second, another photo of Friday's rattlesnake. Bonnie, "counting coup" means to "touch". It's French (pronounced "coo"), but was a common term for the Plains Indian method of fighting, which was to strike your enemy without actually doing him any great physical harm. Basically a demonstration of your bravery and prowess, and an embarrassment to him. Often done with a stick with a heavy knot or medicine bag on the end. Kind of unfair when they first fought American troops, since the Indians were trying to count coup, and the troopers were shooting to kill. As for my worries about the rattlesnake, she was stretched out on the road. I tried to straddle her between the tires (difficult since I was driving backwards, another whole story), but think I may have clipped her head. Several times she opened her mouth and tried to stretch the jaw. Fortunately she was on sand, not something hard and firm, so I hope she'll be okay. |
