my $3,569 mistake The manual recommends downloading data immediately after each pronghorn flight. Last year, I did that. And because of the way my software was set-up, one flight erased the previous flight, and we had to repeat it. This year, I decided to avoid that problem. I'd download it all at the end (also the wisdom of the biologist using the equipment before me). Today, as we sat waiting to taxi out onto the runway, I start up the PDA mounted on my yoke. And it jumps into its initialization routine. That's not riiight. Our software is not there. As in, not just the data is gone, but also the software for running the flights. According to the fellow who set this all up, occassionally there is a surge into the PDA when you start up the plane. That puts it into a hard reboot. It's a Flash drive memory. There is nothing to recover. It's gone. All gone. Every pronghorn we saw in the three flights. The $3,569 flights. Craaaaap. "Sick" does not describe the feeling. The good news? We get to do it all over again. Starting Saturday. |
