north ends of south-bound elk

It's easy to see why the elk are here. Lots of wind-bared ridgetops to feed on. To the west, nothing but deep snow.

East, south and north are no different. Just white.

Not the elk's fault much of the forage on those bared ridges is toxic.

Another elk found down...

The high, windswept hills behind her is the winter range she's supposed to be on. Where most of her compadres are spending the winter. Hundreds and hundreds of them.

With no problems with lichen.

And here we have...

The north ends of some south-bound elk. A good thing to see, for two reasons. One, because south is where their summer ranges are. The sooner they start their spring migration, the better. And two, because everyone was up and moving.

The best thing of all.

Butcher's bill: 29.
