check station duty (day 2 of 4) First thing I notice heading off to the day's check station is the long stream of semis facing the other way. Yep. Interstate's closed. Hope youngest son can get back to university (He did.). Second thing was all the snow on the surrounding hills. Folks coming out said town had the same problem with broken branches and trees. And some of them lost power, too. Third thing I noticed was the New Yorker pulling a pop-up trailer. She looked lost. Since she passed me three times, I'm sure she was. Check station was a sloppy mess. I was repeatedly grateful to the highway department guys who used my site for storing pea gravel. And left me several inches when they were done. With our wind the snow melted quickly, and by afternoon most was gone. 'Course, without pea gravel, melting snow tends to make mud. Some hunters were smart enough to stay on the main roads and not tear up the countryside and their vehicles. Some were not. The neighborhood pronghorn are deep in the rut, and appeared totally indifferent to the snow. But the snow definitely put a damper on hunters' plans, and I probably checked half the animals that I did yesterday. Just lots of visitin' (most often about the weather). But one of the last was a nice archery harvest. By sunset I was eager to leave.
