nudging the rug At least once a day, I will stop in between the foot of our bed and the wife's dresser, and gently toe the throw rug four to five inches to the left, until it is perfectly, evenly spaced between the front legs of the dresser. I often go through this exact same ritual three, or even four times a day. Once, after many, many months (or years?) of properly aligning the rug, I followed the wife into the bathroom. I assume you're the one responsible for the rug being out of place all the time? She knew exactly what I meant. "Yes." She often sits on the end of the bed, whether brushing or drying her hair, just watching television, or working the crossword puzzle while nibbling on lunch. And naturally she can't sit in the middle, 'cause there's always at least one, and usually two, red heelers who want to sit right next to her left arm. So she's off to the right side. "I like the rug square under my feet, instead of having one foot on the edge." So. Everytime I've moved that rug to the center, the wife has soon moved it back off to the right. Mind you. That conversation in the bathroom took place well over a year ago. We're still doing it. Two to three times a day. And no, it doesn't irritate me to find the rug off center again. I like it. It's a little reminder that she has been there. And if it bothers the wife to have to move it back every time, well, she hasn't said so. |
