nora's glasses

Okay, okay.

A couple pictures...

and

They're not really anything distinctive.

Other than their age, and family lineage, of course.

The reason why there were no pictures earlier?

Well, because the wife didn't give me time to take any, that's why. Each and every goblet was unwrapped, while I only got to inspect one, and then all six were immediately re-wrapped and carefully settled back into their box. And carried off to the dining room.

They're hers, you know...

So. anyway, this afternoon I carefully unpacked one precious crystal goblet, and snapped a few shots.

I was surprised to notice the cut designs in the sides weren't roses at all. Just star patterns.

Tells you how brief my allowed inspection was.

And Doug, I completely agree about sharing the stories of these glasses.

Problem is... we don't know the stories behind these glasses. Can't even tell you when Nora acquired them.

Did she bring them over from Ireland? Given that island's reputation for that sort of thing (think "Waterford"), I suspect that may be possible.

But carrying glass goblets in your luggage as you abandon your home and sail across the Atlantic?

Boy, that would be a story in and of itself.

And for all we know, these goblets may have been in Nora's family for generations before. Or perhaps, and I suspect most likely, they were a wedding gift here in America.

Who knows? There are so many possibilities in that one simple object that I held in my hand. So many tales that were not passed on...

But at least the glasses were. And the knowledge that these were hers. I suspect because the wife's mother has seen so many friends and family of her generation pass on recently, she decided it was time to pass these on to the next.

Sad, in one respect. But truth is, that remarkable woman has been passing heirlooms down for at least twenty years, so this isn't really anything terribly new.

And you might suspect this means she's preparing to move again.

And you'd be right.
