shopping for Capatob The wife and youngest son left a little before noon on Sunday. Leaving me home alone with two heelers all day. Two heelers who were terrified of every dark cloud, trying to crawl into my lap for fear of the boomb-a-looms. So, of all the work I stayed home to do, maybe an hour and a half got done. Rest of the time was spent with a marathon running of "The Deadliest Catch". I now know a lot more about crab fishing in the Bering Sea than I really wanted to. The shoppers didn't return from the Green State until midnight. Reeking of Olive Garden. Dang. If I'd known they were gonna eat dinner there, I'da gone along. The heck with paperwork. Youngest son comes in with a big smile, both hands heavily laden with plastic shopping bags. Geez, were there any stores in the Fort you didn't buy something in? "Lots", he says. I'm not so sure. Maybe they skipped the pet store. First thing he showed off was his new watch. A plain, ordinary Timex, like mine. But we can't remember when he last wore a watch. Early grade school, probably. Lived the rest of his life without one, especially when his cell phone came along. He's pretty sure when he's in Russia, he'll still be reaching for a phone on his hip to check time, rather than looking at his wrist. He's already got it set on Capatob time. As the time of departure approaches, he's getting more excited and less scared. We're getting maybe just a little less worried. And a lot more envious. |
