racing to spring

We flew for our collared elk again today. There should be an entry here about the flight, complete with pictures.

But there isn't.

Not when the wife needed this machine for her work this evening...

So, one quick grab from the day:

Part of a herd we guessed at around 200 head. Still haven't had time to red dot the images to find out.

And no, we didn't want them to break and run. Even though that can make the counting easier. And we didn't pass this herd any different than all the others of the day, which did not break into a run.

As we discussed in the plane as we headed on to the next radio signal...

It only takes one with a whim to run, and then they all go. When you got over 200 in the herd, the odds are there'll be at least one with the whim.

But it also means they are enjoying the warm, 60+ degree weather, the longer days, and the increasing abundance of food. You don't run when it might cost precious energy to do it.

Being able to run is a good thing. A sign of spring.

When the pronghorn start running just because they can, well, that will be a sign the winter is over.

Listening to: Colcannon. Always pleasant, but like most bands, they're better in person.
