I miss green

That line from 2010 came to mind as I sat down to find an image to post. I am truly tired of pictures of snow covered landscapes, and elk trotting across snow covered sage.

And I got no new pictures to post today. Our elk flight was canceled again (the third time in four days), this time because of the wind. Steady at 50+ MPH, with gusts predicted above 70 MPH.

Pilot reported part of his conversation with the national weather service... "Well, you can try to fly if you want, because the skies will be clear."

"But you better take a good supply of sick bags."

I guess even the national weather service has heard about me and my flight stomach.

Pilot's retort?

"If we try to fly elk today, I'll need one for myself."

'Course, he still had his ferry flight from DIA, in the more powerful twin engine. Wife and I saw him hovering over town as he took off, trying to get some forward momentum against the headwind.

Yes, the wife had to give me a ride into town this morning. It wasn't until the third time I looked out the window this morning that I realized there is no truck where there is supposed to be a truck.

Drove it in the public meeting last night, and then the wife picked me up for the banquet.

And we forgot to go back to get the truck afterwards.

Thinking about tipping the velvet will do that to you.

So. Ahem. Aaaaanyway, the pilot said he could barely manage 120 knots on takeoff. Once he got headed downwind towards DIA (that's Denver International Airport for those of you in other parts of the planet, like Australia, Kuwait, Netherlands and Singapore) he was flying at 330 knots.

But the plane engine was only doing 160 knots. The rest was tailwind.

No, we no fly for elk, close to the ground, in this wind.

So, back to the subject of green:

Went back into the image files for green months (in the Northern hemisphere, at least), and this jumped out at me from June.

Just so you know, that is all a private residence down there. You can even see the owner's helicopter parked on the square pad below the arena.

You should see the two new hunting lodges he was having built this summer.

Elk 604 spent her Springs and Falls on the mountain at the upper left of the screen. Hence our visit to his airspace.
